Connect your PC or Laptop to the internet using a mobile phone

If your landline is out of service and you are unable to connect to the internet to access essential services that you cannot access using your Smartphone, you can use your mobile phone as a dialup modem. However, the connection is  slow:

2G phones have an upload speed of 115.2Kbps
3G phones have an upload speeed of 435.5Kbps
But the download speed is less than 56Kbps

But, importantly it does allow your computer to access the internet.

Using HTC Wildfire S as a modem (USB tethering)

Enable your data connection as follows:

  • Set your Mobile network to ON
  • Next connect your mobile phone to your PC/laptop via the USB cable
  • The connect to PC window is displayed on your mobile with a number of options
  • Next Select USB tethering and then press DONE

If you want to confirm the connection has been established you can:

  • Go to (windows XP) Control Panel ¦ Network Connections and you should see that the HTC Remote NDIS Based device is connected, or
  • in the case of Vista or Windows 7, go to  Control Panel ¦ Network & Sharing and you should see that the HTC Remote NDIS Based device is connected

Now you can either open your web browser or your email client and check your emails. Hope you found this article helpful, www.pcinternet-solutions.co.uk

How to measure & monitor your broadband speed

Many ISPS (Internet Service Providers) provide their own tools for testing the speed of your connection, also there are many good freely available tools on the internet for carrying out this task.

http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ is a particularly good site and they offer an excellent tool for testing the speed of your internet connection; it also saves historical data from previous tests you carried out and it is simple to use:

Click Begin and first of all it tests the Download speed (files downloaded to your computer from the internet via your ISP). It then tests the Upload speed (files uploaded to the internet from your computer via your ISP) and both speeds are displayed in kbps (kilobytes per second). Note 1000kpbs = 1mbps (megabytes per second). So if your download speed is showing at 5197kbps this = 5.197mbps.

Hopefully you find this useful. PCIS support.

HMRC warn of email scam

“HMRC have issued a warning about possible fake or ‘phishing’ emails sent out by fraudsters. The period in the run-up to the tax credits renewal deadline often sees an increase in such attacks. Taxpayers have to renew their claims by 31 July 2012 or their payments may stop…..”

Paul Walsh website coming shortly

We are currently developing a web site, for one of our long standing clients Paul Walsh, which we expect to launch in the next few weeks around the middle of June 2012. Paul’s business, Phoenix Training delivers Performance improvement for individuals and Businesses through Business Coaching, Business Communications & Business Consultancy and Training.

Paul is also London Division B Governor for Toastmasters in London.

Currently, he is in training (lots of cycling) for a forthcoming bike ride to raise money to build and open a school, this Autumn 2012 in Gourcy, Burkina Fasso, Africa. In his quest to raise money Paul plans to cycle from London to Brighton (no mean achievement) by moonlight, on Friday evening 29th June. The proceeds from sponsorship is paid directly to ‘Giving Africa’  a charity that seeks  to eradicate poverty through Learning, and its Vision is of an Africa whose children have the opportunity to create empowered communities and live healthy and prosperous lives.

Why Burkina Fasso? Because:

1. 81% of the population survive on less than $2 per day.

2. The Government does not have the funds to provide quality education for all;

3. The people of Burkina Fasso are resourceful and are working with ‘Giving Africa’ on overcoming this challenge.

If you would like to support Paul in his quest, please visit his fundraising page, Paul’s page where he is fundraising for Giving Africa.

Many thanks for helping Paul.
